Euclid's Elements - Euclid's Elements (Greek: ) is a mathematical and geometric treatise, consisting of 13 books, written by the Greek mathematician Euclid around 300 BC. It comprises a collection of definitions, postulates (axioms), propositions (theorems) and proofs thereof. Euclid of Megara - Euclid of Megara, a Greek Socratic philosopher who lived around 400 BC, founded the Megarian school of philosophy. Editors and translators in the Middle Ages often confused him with Euclid of Alexandria when discussing the latter's Elements. Euclid's lemma - Euclid's lemma is a generalisation of Proposition 30 of Book VII of Euclid's Elements. The lemma states that Euclidean algorithm - The Euclidean algorithm (also called Euclid's algorithm) is an algorithm to determine the greatest common divisor (gcd) of two integers. It is one of the oldest algorithms known, since it appeared in Euclid's Elements around 300 BC.

What little biographical information we do have comes largely from commentaries by Proclus and Pappus of Alexandria: He was active at the great library in Alexandria and may have studied at Plato's Academe in Greece, but his exact lifespan and place of birth are unknown.
